Neues Palais

The imposing Neues Palais was built on the orders of Frederick the Great as a display of Prussian might. He rarely stayed there, preferring Sanssouci Palace across the park, and its main function was as guest quarters for visiting dignitaries. The construction was completed in just seven years and it was filled with fine furniture and paintings.

Until the 19th Century, the palace was only occasionally used by members of the Royal family, but in 1889 it became the favoured residence of Emperor William II, the last Kaiser. He used it until his abdication in 1918.
