Glienicker Bruecke

Ever since the early 17th Century, Glienicke Bridge has provided an important link between the Royal palaces in Potsdam and the state capital, Berlin. The current steel structure was opened in 1907. It was blown up in April 1945 but was again rebuilt between 1947 & 1949.

During the Cold War, the border between East and West cut through the middle of the bridge, and from 1952 the crossing point was closed to everyone except military officials travelling between the occupied zones. The bridge became a symbol of the divided Germany. It also was the scene of agent exchanges between the USA and USSR, including Francis Gary Powers (1962) and Anatoly Sharansky (1986).
