The Obelisk marks the eastern end of the Hauptallee - the main driveway through Park Sanssouci. It was constructed in 1747/48 by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff. The hieroglyphics are purely decorative and have no meaning (Egyptian hieroglyphics were not deciphered until the mid-19th century).
