Am Neuen Palais

These two large buildings, linked by an imposing colonnade, were constructed between 1766 & 1769 by Carl von Gontard and Jean Laurent Le Geay.
Despite their ornate appearance, the function of the Communs was practical. The southern building housed the palace kitchens (linked to the Neues Palais by a tunnel), and the northern building housed various offices and servant quarters. Later, as servant numbers shrunk, the northern building was also used to accomodate guests.
The Communs are now part of the University of Potsdam.
