Built as the summer palace of Prinz Carl von Preußen, who after a journey through Italy was determined to build a grand Italian villa. He employed Karl Friedrich Schinkel to design the building and the plush interior. It was completed in 1826. The surrounding parkland was landscaped by Peter Joseph Lenné in the English style.
