(Nikolai Church)
Am Alten Markt

Built to replace an earlier church, construction was spread over twenty years between 1830 & 1849. The initial design was by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, who died before its completion. Building work was supervised by Ludwig Persius and Friedrich August Stueler. The dome was heavily influenced by St.Paul's Cathedral in London.
In the last days of World War 2 the building was badly damaged, first by British bombs, and then by Russian artillery. The interior was burnt out and the dome completely destroyed. Restoration took more than 35 years.
