Weinbergterrassen

The vineyard terraces were laid out on the orders of Frederick the Great in 1744. One year later work began on Schloss Sanssouci on the hilltop above.

The terraces are each slightly curved towards the centre, to take full advantage of the sun. Vines from Portugal, Italy and France were planted to grow up the rear retaining walls. There are also 168 glazed niches to grow figs.

An elegant set of stairways lead down the centre of the terraces to the ornamental garden below.
