(Orangery)
Maulbeerallee / An der Orangerie

This enormous 300 metre-long building, with its accompanying terraces and water features, was built over a thirteen year period (1851 - 1864) for Friedrich Wilhelm IV. The architects - Ludwig Persius, August Stueler and Ludwig Ferdinand Hesse - were heavily influenced by the King's interest in buildings of the Italian Renaissance.
The long wings contain glass houses, still providing winter storage for large potted plants. At the ends of the building are offices and former Royal apartments, while in the centre is the Raffaelsaal (Raphael Hall), housing a collection of 19th century copies of Raphael paintings.
