Schloss Charlottenhof

Originally the site of a Baroque manor house, Charlottenhof was bought by King Friedrich Wilhelm III in 1825 and given to his son Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm (later Friedrich Wilhelm IV).

The old house was demolished and a new summer palace was built on the foundations, to a design by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. It was inspired by classical Roman villas.

Building work began in 1826 and was completed in 1829. The parkland associated with the palace was landscaped by Peter Joseph Lenné, joining seamlessly with Park Sanssouci.
