Historische Windmuehle

The original windmill was built on this site in 1738 - pre-dating the nearby Schloss Sanssouci. It seems that over the years the millers enjoyed good relations with their royal neighbours, despite legends to the contrary.

By 1787 the windmill had seen better days, and was replaced by the current design of mill by Friedrich Wilhelm II, at his own expense. The work was completed in 1791. During the fighting for Potsdam in April 1945, the windmill and adjoining Swiss House were destroyed by fire.

In the 1980's and 90's, the mill was reconstructed in its 1791 form.
