Bildergalerie

Frederick the Great was a passionate collector of paintings. The Bildergalerie was built between 1755 & 1764 by Johann Gottfried Buering to house the King's collection.

A large number of paintings were taken by Russia in 1946, but in recent years some have been returned.

The Bildergalerie is the oldest surviving royal gallery in Germany. It holds works by van Dyck, Rubens and Caravaggio, amongst others.
