Belvedere auf dem Pfingstberg

The design of the Belvedere - built between between 1847 & 1863 - was based on sketches by Friedrich Wilhelm IV. Working from these, the architects Persius, Hesse and Stueler built an imposing complex of Italian-Rennaisance style collonades, crowned by two 25-metre high viewing towers. In the centre of the building was a large reservoir. The original plans were even more ambitious, but with the death of Friedrich Wilhelm IV in 1861 they were cut short.

After 1945, the Pfingstberg was in a Russian military area, and the building was left to crumble. It was saved in 1990 by a group of volunteers, and has since been restored to its former glory. It offers unparalleled views over Potsdam.
